Hi, I am a friend of Beth Shalom, living in Vancouver.
Other than financial support, is there anything that other Jewish communities( outside of NZ) can do to help in this matter?

Do we need to fund the shaliach? I say so.

Essentially, Beth Shalom has outsourced a MAJOR piece of a synagogue’s work to Habo–youth programming. If there were no Habo, we would need a 1/2 time youth worker (to include camps, weekends) at substantially higher cost. We’ve been lucky to date that the Israeli government has picked up the tab, but since they’ve changed their policy we MUST, I believe, find a way to contribute to the continuation of such programming–or determine that the next rabbi will be a youth worker and not do much of the other work that Beth Shalom has come to expect from its clergy.

We will have input in the hiring process–already have had–although it’s true that it is one voice among several.

The question I see isn’t whether to support the shelichim, but how best to do so.
