Beth Shalom Community Care

Community Care is today’s equivalent of the Sisterhood and is here to help you. Our organisation includes participation by both men and women. Our focus is to offer assistance or support to:
- congregants and families during times of illness or difficulty;
- forwarding of life cycle events to Teruah for publication;
- hospital, rest home, and home visits;
- senior members meetings and monthly luncheon;
- transport;
- co-ordinating support volunteers;
- recognition of simchas and lifecycle events; and
- assistance with accessing community support services where necessary.

Community Care representatives are respectful of your privacy.
We look forward to being of service to you.

Please contact our Chairperson, Lita Summerfield, with any queries on (09) 832 3453.

Social, Cultural and Educational Activities

A wide range of social, cultural and educational activities is offered by the many Jewish organisations in Auckland. There are picnics, dinners, adult education seminars, guest speakers (both local and international) and many activities for the youth.

Some of the Jewish organisations active in Auckland include:
- B'nai B'rith;
- Zionist Society;
- United Israel Appeal;
- Council of Jewish Women;
- WIZO;
- B'nei Akiva;
- AUJS;
- Habonim Dror;
- Maccabi; and
- Hadassah.

Auckland also has a Jewish retirement home known as Shalom Court. Residents live in self-contained flatettes with tea/coffee making facilities and eat the main meal of the day together in a shared dining room.

Jewish Youth Groups

B'nei Akiva and Habonim are active in Auckland. Both groups have regular meetings, usually on a Sunday. Camps are held every summer and winter, and older members sometimes attend camps in Australia. Both movements regularly have their own shaliach (youth leader) from Israel . They usually come for about three years. The movements fulfil a social, cultural, and religious function for their members, many of whom ultimately spend a year in Israel before returning to New Zealand with advanced leadership training.

Senior Outreach Service

The Senior Outreach Service was established in 2003 to deliver free support and advocacy to Jewish Seniors(65+) living at home or in care in Greater Auckland. Assistance to clients is provided on a strictly confidential basis. Outreach Service
